Long Time Gone by Mary Connealy

Book review of Long Time Gone by Mary Connealy (Bethany House) by papertapepins

Someone Will Stop at Nothing to Claim the Boden Homestead!

The Boden clan thought their problems had ended with the death of a dangerous enemy, but have they uncovered the real plot to take their 1880s New Mexico ranch? Justin Boden is a top rancher and a rugged man, and yet with his brother, Cole, shot and in mortal danger, even a tough man faces doubts. And it doesn't help that Angie DuPree, the assistant to the doctor trying to save Cole, is as distracting a woman as Justin ever laid eyes on.

With her and the doc's timely skills, Cole looks to be on the mend. Now Justin and the rest of the Bodens can turn their attention back to the threats facing them. It's clear now that everything that's occurred is part of a much bigger plot that could date back to a decades-old secret. Can they pull together all the pieces before danger closes in on them, or is the risk of losing the ranch even greater than any of them could imagine?

The second book of the Cimarron Legacy does not disappoint! This is a western suspense with cowboys and trouble and feisty women and cows ... not in any particular order! Did I mention there is also humor? Some of that is in the form of Angie and her penchant for somewhat clumsily continuously finding trouble. The first time she met Justin she fell into his arms, literally! Now she's come to help nurse his brother Cole back to health at the ranch and Justin can't think of anyone less suited to ranch life, at least at the beginning.

Heath and Sadie Kincaid are still central characters in this book. They were featured in the first book but they still live and work on the ranch for the time being. I was quite fond of those characters so it was nice to have them back. According to their father's will, the 3 Boden siblings must live and work on the ranch together for one year or lose it entirely. Justin was the only one living there, but Cole and Sadie come rushing home. The thing is, the will was put into effect but their father survived the accident and is alive. He is happy to see that his plan worked, no matter how it came about, and that the land will stay in Boden hands where it has been for generations ... or so they think they are in the clear after the man who attempted to murder him is found but there is more trouble brewing.

This series is definitely worth picking up if you like rootin' tootin' westerns with some clean romance and a fresh feel. This is no stale, already been there, done that story.
