A Matter Of Trust by Susan May Warren

Book review of A Matter Of Trust by Susan May Warren (Revell) by papertapepins

It's those we love who have the power to hurt us most . . .

Champion backcountry snowboarder Gage Watson has left the limelight behind after the death of one of his fans. After being sued for negligence and stripped of his sponsorships, he's remade his life as a ski patrol in Montana's rugged mountains, as well as serving on the PEAK Rescue team. But he can't seem to find his footing--or forget the woman who betrayed him.

Senator and former attorney Ella Blair spends much of her time in the public eye as one of the youngest senators in the country. But she has a secret--one that cost Gage his career. More than anything, she wants to atone for her betrayal of him in the courtroom and find a way to help him put his career back on track.

When Ella's brother goes missing on one of Glacier National Park's most dangerous peaks, Gage and his team are called in for the rescue. But Gage isn't so sure he wants to help the woman who destroyed his life. More, when she insists on joining the search, he'll have to keep her safe while finding her reckless brother--a recipe for disaster when a snowstorm hits the mountain.

I very much enjoyed being immersed in the world of skiing and snowboarding, both from the viewpoint of ski patrol and the extreme snowboarding down the face of a forbidding mountain. Gage Watson is a has been in the extreme snowboarding world since a scandal broke involving the death of a fan, and now he is ski patrol at a popular resort. As fate (or the author) would have it, he is called upon to rescue a snowboarder thought to have disappeared out of bounds who turns out to be non other than the brother of a woman who was instrumental in ending his career. A woman he had been falling for. Of course.

In a turn of events it's the two of them that head off in a thrilling downhill ride of their lives to find Ella's hotheaded brother and his companion before it's too late. The author's descriptions of the scenery and amazing daredevil stunts kept me entranced and wanting more, while also showcasing the incredible amount of detail she has learned about this extreme sport. I was so impressed! Of course I would have no way of knowing how accurate it all is but it was fun to read all the same.

I was disappointed with some of the other smaller side storylines with the other couples from PEAK rescue, especially concerning Pete and Jess. They were featured fairly heavily in the story but nothing has been resolved yet. However, that just makes me look forward to the next book all the more. It's just that I forget so much in between books!

Montana mountains, extreme sports, PEAK rescue team, God's faithfulness .... all adds up to a wonderful story in an amazing series.
