Egg Experiment: Naked Eggs

These eggs are soft and held together only by a membrane. The shells are gone! See the difference?

We put the eggs in vinegar and left them for 48 hours. The shell of an egg is made of calcium carbonate, which is limestone. The vinegar reacts with it and dissolve it and as it dissolves it releases carbon dioxide. The eggs are left soft and rubbery feeling.

A very easy and kid friendly experiement!

We are going to see if we can expand one egg and shrink the other by soaking them in different things. Stay tuned ... we'll update again in a few days.
