8 Great Online Writing Tools For Students

Story Starters from Scolastic for early writers

I'll start this list with the online writing tool that's the most fun. Have you seen the Story Starter Machine on the Scholastic website? It's a fun way for young writers to pick a topic for their journal entry or story writing assignment.
Instant Poetry Forms for young writers

ETTC's new Instant Poetry Forms are not fancy, but they are fun. Some of them are mostly written and you fill in a word here and there, and for others have you write a little more.
Writing With Writers from Scholastic

Writing With Writers is another great resource from Scholastic. Different authors give virtual workshops on subjects like Writing A Book Review, News Writing or Mystery Writing.
newsclipping generator for young writers

Generate a short, realistic looking newspaper clipping with this Newspaper Clipping Generator. It's always nice to find another way for young writers to present their work.
Create your own comic strip at Make Beliefs Comix

Create your own comic strip at Make Beliefs Comix. Add characters, scenes and objects, a background colour, word bubbles, and viola!
word art generator - wordle

"Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide." Create beautiful word cloud art to download and print or share online. Another "out of the box" way to present a subject.
Grammarly - online grammar and spelling checker

For older students (high school),

After The Deadline is another spelling and grammar checker. This one is free, but not as fully featured as Grammarly. I use it with most of my blog posts just to make sure there are no glaring mistakes I haven't caught.

Have fun with your new tools!
