How To Make Mini Velcro Hairclips - A Tutorial

You will need:

• glue gun
• elastic thread, or regular sewing thread will do if you don't have it.
• 3/8" grosgrain ribbon
• scissors
• lighter or such to melt ribbon ends
• velcro
• cardboard or something to protect your table from the glue gun

To make the little clips, cut a 2 1/4" piece of ribbon (or two for a set), singe the ends to keep them from fraying, and fold it in half. 

Cut your velcro down to fit on the ribbon (about 3/4" long), stick on your self adhesive velcro, or use a hot glue gun to secure it if it's not sticky on one side.

Now to make the bow, loop one side over towards you, 

and then loop it back over top and cut off the end about even with the tip sticking out underneath.

Pinch your bow between your thumb and forefinger, as above, and wrap the elastic thread around it, pulling it tight and tie a knot. 

Then cut a 1" piece of ribbon to go around your bow. Attach with glue on the wrong side of the bow, wrap around and glue again.

Now all that's left is to attach your bow to your little clip! Hot glue and press on gently.

Pretty easy, right?

All I did for presentation for the gift was cut a piece of card stock with two parallel lines 1/2" apart down the middle and clip them on. Gift complete!

DIY 3D Owl Hair Clip - A Tutorial

I've seen variations of these owls around, but couldn't find a tutorial anywhere so I decided to see if I could figure it out. It wasn't that hard after all, and boy are they cute! 

These little guys would also make adorable zipper pulls for backpacks or key tags!

You will need:

1" ribbon scraps

3/8" ribbon

lighter to seal ribbon ends

goggly eyes

ribbon covered alligator clip - There's a great tutorial on how to do this and make it no slip at Make It Love It.

First, make a circle out of a 2.75" piece of 1" ribbon, seal the ends, and glue together with your glue gun.

That's the middle of the body and now we'll make the outline and ears. To do this, I just leave the ribbon attached to the roll and start to go around the body. If you cut 6.5" you will have enough. Glue gun the ribbon to what is going to be the bottom of the owl.

Now go up to the top of the owl, then pinch a little piece (a 1/4" or so) and glue it to itself, then glue along the top of the 1" circle, and do the same for the other ear.

TIP: try to make sure to have the 3/8" ribbon go up the center of your fat circle so that you don't have and overly puffy, or flat, front to your owl.

Now it's time to make the wings. Cut a piece of 3/8" ribbon approx. 5.75" long. You need to tuck the ends up behind the center of the ribbon, making two equal curls on either side. The trick here is to have the ends at right sides to the top of the middle so that the wings lay nicely. Also, you want to put the ends close enough together that they end up completely behind the owl's body.

Glue the wings to the back of the body 1/8" to 1/4" down from the ribbon on the top of the head. 

And now you're ready to add a face and attach the owl to the ribbon covered alligator clip! :)

How To Make A Loopy Flower Hair Clip - A Tutorial

The first step is to gather your materials. You need a ribbon covered alligator clip. There's a great tutorial on how to do this and make it no slip at Make It Love It.

You'll need 4 pieces of ribbon 4.75" and 4 pieces 5.5" as well as a 6" piece of green and a small piece of white for the center knot.

Take one of your strips and glue the two ends together, forming a circle.

Then twist it to form a figure eight, and glue the center to hold it. Do this with all nine pieces of ribbon.

Now you have this:

Now glue the green piece of ribbon (the leaves) to the alligator clip. Center it over the clip.

Now we'll form the flowers. Layer the four matching figure eights onto each other one at a time. It's best to do this first without glue to figure out the spacing. Do this for the both the top and bottom layers of the flower.

Once you've done this, glue the bottom layer of the flower onto the leaves.

Add the top layer and a knot and you're done!

These are my favourite so far, and really easy to make! I followed the tutorial by Jane Crafts, except that my last step is different so that the ends of the bows are both at the back (well technically one is sort of in the middle . . ) and pointing down. 

I always make them no-slip with drawer liner and felt like I learned from Make It and Love It. It really is amazing how well they stay in.

This is a really easy hair bow to make, even if you've never attempted it before.

Rosebud Hair Clips - with no slip grip!

I love these little rosebud hair clips! I found a tutorial for them from Hip Girl Boutique. They are actually quite simple.

To make the  korker (curly) ribbon, I just wind it around wooden skewers, securing it on the ends with clothespins and pop it in the oven at 250 for 30 minutes. If you'd like to see a more in depth picture tutorial, here's one from Sweeter Than Sweets. I have never used spray starch and they keep their curl just fine. 

The no slip grip part is pure genius on the part of Make It Love It. The secret ingredients? Felt and drawer liner! It works amazingly well. They really stay put. See her tutorial here.

Sweet Pea needed some new hair clips so it was time to experiment again. I like the curly korker ribbon, but I didn't want to end up with huge poofy bows because she's still so little. These worked out exactly as I hoped. 

I followed the tutorial from Hip Girl Boutique. They have quite a few! 

I lined my clips to make them no-slip the same way as last time. Make It and Love It shows how to do this (and it works really well!) in this tutorial. 

I make my own korker (curly) ribbons. I twist the grosgrain ribbon around wooden skewers or doweling, securing the ends with clothes pins. Pop in them in the oven at 250 for 30 minutes. It also works on the sheer ribbon. If you want to see pictures and more detail on how to do it, here's a great tutorial to check out. I wouldn't bother with the spray starch, mine keep their shape just fine without it.

I'll be making some more hair bows soon. It's kind of addicting. :)

I couldn't find cute hair bows for Sweet Pea's hair anywhere. I remember when Petunia was this age there were tiny velcro bows in the dollar stores but they are nowhere to be found this time around.

So I went looking for a tutorial. I found one at make it and love it and it was easy, adorable and inexpensive. Score!
